The university was founded in 1974 as Anhui Normal University at Huaibei. Approved by the State Council and established as Huaibei Coal Industry Teachers College in December, 1978, it was assigned to be administered by the former Ministry of Coal Industry and started to enroll students from all over China. After September of 1998, the university operated in a management system of “being jointly constructed by both the central and Anhui municipal governments, but mainly administered by the latter”. The university was authorized to confer master degrees in 2003 and received “Excellence” level in the quality level evaluation of undergraduate education conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2007. In 2009, HNU was enrolled as an institution with the approved program of constructing it into a unit with the right to confer doctoral degrees and was also approved to establish postdoctoral posts in Anhui Province. In the same year, it signed an agreement with Anhui University to jointly cultivate doctoral degree candidates. There are now more than 20,000 full-time undergraduate and post-graduate students at school, 18 schools and 56 undergraduate specialties in HNU. It has become a key university in Anhui Province with a large scale in school-running, a wide coverage of the disciplinary categories and distinctive features. Based on concentration on cultivating talents for Anhui with a consideration of serving the whole country, HNU will maintain its characteristics and strive to become a high-level teachers university with distinctive features, a balanced development of multiple disciplines and popularity in certain fields within China in the near future.
The university is located in Huaibei City of Anhui Province which is a national energy base and a Nationally Designated Garden City in China. Situated at the foot of a mount, the university campus is full of pleasant scenes and strong humanistic taste with green grasses, trees and flowers which are not only luxuriant, but also well-spaced. It has been entitled “Garden-like Unit of Anhui” and “Model Unit for Greening in China”. The university covers a total area of 140 hectares with more than 500,000 square meters of floor area. Up to now, the university has stored about 1,530,000 books in its library. The university now has 4 provincial-level key laboratories, 2 provincial-level key research centers of humanities and social sciences, 17 characteristic discipline laboratories jointly constructed by both the central and Anhui municipal governments, 4 provincial-level model centers for experimental teaching of foundation courses. There are also an affiliated experimental high school (a provincial-level model senior high school), 1 experimental primary school and 106 regular graduation fieldwork bases.
The university has cultivated more than 50,000 talents of different specialties during the last 37 years. It has been widely recognized by society and praised by its superiors for its high quality in school-running. It has been named three times in succession “Advanced Unit of Talent Cultivation in Anhui Province”. The university has also been entitled “Advanced Unit of Anhui Province”, “Advanced Unit in Employment Work among the Regular Undergraduate Universities in Anhui Province”, and “Advanced Unit in Management of Scientific Research in Anhui Province”, etc. Besides, it has been entitled “National Advanced Unit in University Students’ Social Practice in China” and “Excellent Service Team” for 21 times in succession by its superiors during the past 19 years.
