Lanzhou City University is a regular institution of higher learning offering full-time undergraduate programs, which was founded with approval of the Ministry of Education in China. The University is located in Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu province.
The university is composed of three campuses, covering an area of 700.6 mu (116.8 acres), with a floor space of 358,000 square meters and a fixed assets amounting to RMB 310 million yuan. It boasts various instruments and equipment for teaching valuing at 56.8 million yuan, and a library with a collection of 638,000 volumes of books, 153,000 electronic books and around 2000 of periodical subscription (both domestic and foreign ).
The university has a teaching and administrative staff of around 1107. About 646 of them are full-time teaching staff members. Among them, 320 are professors and associate professors, 50 are doctor’s degree holders and 361 master’s degree holders. It has fifteen colleges, 10 institutes. The university also runs the Institute of Gansu Urban Development, the Training Center for Gansu Primary School Principals, and the Training Base for Professional and Technical Personnel in Gansu, etc. It offers 55 various specialities at undergraduate and junior college level covering humanity, science, social science, management and engineering, etc., with a total enrollment of 13,000 or so full-time students. It also has 25 comprehensive laboratories and training centers of physics, chemistry, computer science, physical education, educational technique, etc.
The university has undertaken one after another about 224 state and provincial level scientific research projects. 2674 papers have been published in various journals above provincial level, among which 50 are collected by the SCI. 83 academic books on various subjects have been published and 209 textbooks in various fields have been compiled and published with our staff members as chief and assistant editors. 177 achievements in scientific and educational research have been awarded with various awards at provincial and ministerial levels. The university has also been awarded respectively as the National Advanced Unit for Spiritual Civilization Construction, Provincial Model Unit, Provincial Advanced Unit for Social Practice, Provincial Model Unit for Citizens’ Moral Conducts.
The university has established relations of friendship and cooperation with the National Normal University and National Music Conservatory of Kazakhstan, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology in New Zealand, University of Applied Sciences Wildau in Germany, Penza State University in Russia, Belarus State University, Wigan & Leigh College in the UK, Ottawa University and New Finland University in Canada. It also had exchange relationship with Hanns Seidel Foundation in German, and has long-term cooperation with Hongkong Open University, Tianjin Normal University, East China Normal University, Northwest Normal University, Capital Normal University and Shaanxi Normal University, etc.
Lanzhou City University focuses on training high-level qualified personnel with practical skills required for urban economy, urban construction, urban culture and urban service. In the meanwhile it takes into consideration of training teaching staff with undergraduate degrees for both fundamental education and vocational and technical education. Following the principle of “emphasizing and developing functions of urban service, carrying on and optimizing its characteristic of teacher training, and paying great attention to and further strengthening the applied disciplines”, Lanzhou City University will carry out reform in the structure of its disciplines and specialties offered and in the mode of running the school, so as to gradually turn itself into a university characterized by its applied discipline training in accordance with the requirement of the urban construction and development, and to become the training center for the qualified personnel of urban construction, the center of urbanization strategy study and applied technology development, the center of urbanization information and cultural exchange and the center of primary school teaching staff training in Gansu and even in the whole northwest region, to provide brain power and qualified personnel support for the urbanization, industrialization, and fundamental education in Gansu and in China.
