General Information
Capital Medical University (CMU) was founded in 1960. It is recognized as one of the well-known universities in Beijing. The university consists of 10 Schools, 19 affiliated hospitals with 16555 beds and almost 37 teaching hospital partners. About 35,128 faculty and staff members of the university and its hospitals are providing education and health care to Chinese people and international friends. The enrollment of students is over 14,000.
Mission Statement & Goal
The mission of CMU is to prepare students as qualified health professionals, promote medical research innovations and provide health care to public, by dedicating to the educational proposition of “serving patients, contributing to community, respecting ethics and striving for expertise”. The university focuses on turning students into clinicians and professionals in the fields of prevention, Rehabilitation, Biomedical Engineering and basic medicine.
Students & Faculty
There are 10,132 full-time students studying at the university. Among them there are 2,943 postgraduates and 3,214 undergraduates including 433 (approximately 10%) international students, which come from 46 countries in Europe, America, Oceanica, Asia and Africa. There are also 1,983 students studying in diploma programs and 4,654 part-time undergraduates.
The faculty and staff members are devoted to education, research and health care in the university and its affiliated hospitals. The university and the affiliated hospitals have about 35,128 staff members. Among them, there are 1,875 professors and 3,275 associate professors including 6 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Research Excellence
The university is well recognized for its strength in scientific research. It hosts 10 nationally-funded disciplines (neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, neurobiology, respirology, cardiology, neurology, pediatrics, digestive diseases, medical imaging and nuclear medicine), 24 municipally-funded disciplines and 36 nationally-funded and municipally-funded key laboratories.
International Exchange & Co-operations
CMU is listed in “World Directory of Medical Schools” by World Health Organization. Each year about 100 international students seeking for MBBS apply for the 6-year Bachelor program of medicine. As the Degree of medicine granted by CMU is recognized by Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), medical graduates from the university are qualified to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination? (USMLE?). We also have a training program of the exam, which is tailored for international students.
The university has partnerships with a lot of prestigious universities and institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, including Northwestern University and University of Pittsburgh in U.S., University of Toronto and University of Calgary in Canada, University of Queensland and Deakin University in Australia, Cardiff University in U.K., etc. The co-operation programs include students and faculty exchange programs, joint education programs, joint research programs and so on. We also offer to international students training programs of clinical observation, TCM & acupuncture, public health, community medicine, nursing, etc.
