Established in 1978, the college of Applied Arts and Science of Beijing Union University was a combination of the former branch campuses of Peking University and Renmin University of China. Being Beijing Municipality attached, this comprehensive university provides mainly undergraduate courses ranging from liberal arts, sciences, history to economics, laws and managements, with approximately 3,000 current students.
The university is situated by the Xiaoyue River, Xue Yuan Road, Haidian District, where the Jimen Misty Tree, one of the eight Yenching Scenic Spots is located, together with many other research institutes and universities. With elegant buildings amidst exuberant trees and flowers on the campus, the university provides its students with a quiet and comfortable environment for study.
The college has highly qualified teaching faculty. It has over 179 full-time teachers, including more than 90 with a senior title and five experts entitled to the Government’s Special Subsidy. 85% of the teachers hold a master’s or above degree. In addition, there are young and middle-aged initiators of different academic field working on the campus.
Now, there are 10 undergraduate specialties provided, two of which are appointed Key Fields of Study of Beijing Municipality, namely, Food Science and Economic Law. Besides, the programs of Biology Technology and Resource Environment and Urban Rural Planning are models of specialty construction of Beijing. In addition, the college owns a key laboratory: Beijing Laboratory of Bioactive Substances and Functional Food. In addition to the aforementioned key programs and lab of Beijing Municipality, our college has several key programs of Beijing Union University. History, Human Geography and Journalism are among them. The year 2006 saw the programs of Food Science and Engineering,Archaeology,Specialized History in our college enroll postgraduates as pioneers of Beijing Union University.
The college is open to the world, and has established cooperation relationships with many universities and institutions of higher education in America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Switzerland, Korea, etc. It hosts programs of staff and student exchange. Students in an exchange program will have their credits admitted from both sides, as in the cooperation frames of 3 plus 1 and 3 plus 2. Under the support of Yenchin University Alumni with Mr. Lei Jieqiong as its leader, the college signed an MOU concerning educating students jointly with PESI, an education organization of America. In addition, the college is one of the universities entitled to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Every year, it hosts more than 200 students from either foreign countries or Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
