Ili teacher’s college, an institution of higher learning, is situated in the north-western border city——Yining in the north of Xinjiang province. It grew out of the secondary normal school set up by the Xinjiang province in 1948. On May 7,1980,the school was approved to be Ili Teacher’s College by the State Council. It now has a history of more than fifty years.
The college takes four-year courses as its basis and teaches in the three languages of Chinese, Kazak and Uygur, for which it is vested with the authority to award the degree of Bachelor of Arts. In addition, the college enrolls a number of students for three-year diploma. Today, it has 17 departments, an institute of adult education, the Kazak Culture Research Institute and the Educational Science Institute. The departments are Chinese language and literature, Chinese language, Foreign Languages, Politics and Education, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, physical Culture, Arts, and Computer Science. There are 26 specialties for the four-year students and 36 specialties for the three-year students (including Kui Tun Campus). The specialties are Chinese language and literature, Chinese minority language and literature (Kazak language and literature, Uygur language and literature), English, Chinese, physics, information management and system, mathematics and applied mathematics, chemistry, biology, physical culture, social physical culture, music, art, political and ideological education, law, computer science and technology, electronic information science and technology, history, and broadcasting and TV news. The college staff totals 1272, among them there are 740 teachers (including 192 professors and associate professors and 240 lecturers). The number of the students now comes to more than 14,500. Among them there are more than ten ethnic groups including Han, Kazak, Uygur, Mongol, Xibo, Hui, Tartar and Uzbek. In addition, there have been overseas students from Britain, Japan, America, Germany, and Korea at the college, who have come to study the Chinese, Kazak, Uygur and Xibo languages.
Ili Teacher’s College enjoys fine scenery and offers good teaching facilities. It is known as a garden college, with a campus covering an area of more than 600 mu and its greens covers over 65 percent. The newly built gymnasium (5,300 square meters) has plenty of room for physical training, sports and games for the prefecture. The college library has more than 600,000 books, including 60,000 books in ethnic languages, and subscribes to more than 1,000 magazines every year. Ili is one of the most beautiful places in Xinjiang.
